FMP Proposal

  Final Major Project Proposal 2024

Rebecca Leivers

Working title; Grave goods

Summery of theme;

Grave goods are items buried with the deceased to carry with them into the next life.

In this project I will look in to themes of grief, through site based, historically influenced, intuitive work across local cemeteries and church yards.

My last project involved lots of primary research and gathering of  imagery from local grave yards, via grave rubbings and photography. I want to elaborate on this strand of activity through applied processes of gathering and reinterpreting imagery while in quiet reflection, spending time in nature. Not forcing any particular outcome, just being open to what comes up as a process.

I have been in various stages of grief this last year. my Dad was taken into hospice care in January as his 5 year illness with Myeloma came to an end. He died on the 3rd of March.

I want to use this time in reflection, as its the final project, I seek to revisit and expand on approaches and process that I've most enjoyed through this course, an exploration, that will hopefully be beneficial to processing my own emotions and invite the viewer to contemplate and connect with their own experiences of grief.

Resource plan and activities

I plan to visit lots of church yards and gather visual information, through, direct prints, rubbings, cyanotypes, photography and any other experimental process' I come across, with the aim of creating an outcome of a physical image or sculpture. Contextually I will look into historical links with the sites I visit as I look at expending my story telling and site based research.
I also plan to visit museums and art exhibitions of interest to aid my contextual research. I will seek feed back from my tutors and peers along with on going self evaluation of my practice throughout the project duration. I will continue to gather secondary research  both online at at the library and keep a record of this in a bibliography in my blog.

15 week Time plan

Weeks 1-5; Gather the bulk of primary research, and  experimentation

Weeks 5-10; decide on a clear stand to follow and work towards developing a final piece of work, evaluation and contextual research ongoing to support  the process

Weeks 10-13; refine the final piece of work, think about how to exhibit the work, support from ongoing research, evaluation and seek peer and tutor feed back

Weeks 13-15; clear down space, spend time on researching and experimenting with ways to exhibit work, write up artist statement and exhibition signage, write up final evaluation.
